As I've traveled the country throughout this campaign, I've found that I'm far from alone in this feeling. In fact, one of the opportunities I value most about this election is the chance it has given me to join other survivors in their efforts to raise awareness about this difficult disease. As the prevalence of pink serves to remind us, October is breast cancer awareness month.
As I know from my own experience with breast cancer, prevention and early detection could not be more important. For many women, early detection makes all the difference—it's truly a life-saver. I was fortunate enough to receive my diagnosis before the disease was very far along. And because of that, my cancer was treated successfully. Not everyone in my family has been so fortunate.
My great-grandmother lost her life in her battle with breast cancer. And both my mother and grandmother lost their lives to ovarian cancer. Romney was diagnosed with cancer in January Her husband, presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, "was with me when I got my diagnosis of MS, and then he was with me again when I got the call that my results were back, and that I did have cancer," Ann Romney said.
Listen, you don't fight them alone, you fight them with friends and family. When asked whether she worries about cancer returning, she admitted to holding her breath for every screening. Still, she said she celebrated each day. And you just go on. You just push forward.
She speaks of her cancer diagnosis less frequently and today she spoke about how the disease ravaged the women in her family. So cancer is a serious business. Romney said her husband was with her when she got both diagnoses and that it was essential to "have loved ones around you" during illnesses.
She spent much of the interview discussing cancer with co-host Lori Lundin, who has the same diagnosis. These bags include a small gift from local businesses, as well as cards with a personal, encouraging message from luncheon attendees who have faced a similar breast cancer journey. The bond we have with these patients runs deep, having walked with them through an extremely difficult time.
This luncheon is a great event to see them now healthy and strong. Romney also sits on the Board of Directors of Charity Vision, which focuses on empowering local physicians in the developing world to bring sight to those most in need. In , Romney was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis MS.
