More than building permits have been issued in Franklin County during the past 12 months, according to real estate research group Market Opportunity Research Enterprises of Rocky Mount. The original developers of the Olde Liberty property, Renee McCormick and James McCormick, had envisioned turning the timberland into a massive upscale community with more than homes and a golf club. They expected to market to residents who wanted the luxury living style of nearby Wakefield Plantation and Heritage Wake Forest but at lower prices.

Developer John Toomey subsequently joined the ownership group. Toomey's operating company, Eclipse Properties, was put under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in April That was about 75 percent less than what Olde Liberty paid just eight months later.

Whichard is a closely held, privately owned real estate investment firm that owns and operates about 30 retail strip centers and shopping malls across the Southeast. Angela Whichard and Chad Whichard negotiated the deal for Whichard. Also coming on line in the area is Creedmoor Partners' Hasentree golf community about four miles south of Olde Liberty in northern Wake County. Henry MacNair of Creedmoor Partners says the private golf club will open in summer Road and utility line construction has started, and MacNair says lots will be ready to begin construction in spring Do you play sports?
